North Cyprus in Winter

Despite it being December, North Cyprus is still relatively warm, with average daytime temperatures of around 17C. Days are generally sunny, with clear blue skies or sometimes some cloud for a little while. Occasionally there can be storms, but these are normally short lived, and occur mostly during the night, as the warm air rises. Night-time temperatures can drop to around 8C, but this is still much warmer than the UK.

Recipes with Olive Oil

DAY 7 OF OLIVE WEEK

Olive oil has many uses, however the most common use is as an alternative to sunflower oil when cooking. Olive oil is a much more healthy option, but is only suitable for medium heat frying (around 190C is the smoking point of virgin olive oil). Olive oil can be used for many different things including sautéing, browning, stir-frying and deep frying. It can also be used as an ingredient in marinades and sauces such as mayonnaise. One of the most delicious things is the most simple; a lovely piece of crusty bread dipped in olive oil, which is a popular welcome starter in plenty of restaurants in North Cyprus.

Uses for Olive Oil around the home

DAY 6 OF OLIVE WEEK

Uses for Olive Oil as a medicinal product

As previously mentioned, olive oil is a great source of vitamin E. Consuming olives or olive oil has got many health benefits, including lessening the symptoms of asthma and arthritis, lowering blood pressure, and even helping to prevent stomach ulcers and gallstones. One of the most remarkable properties of olive oil is its ability to help neutralise the damaging free radicals which lead to skin cancer. This is because the oil contains at least four different antioxidants, which help to fight cancer. Olive oil can also help your cholesterol levels, as it promotes good cholesterol (HDL) while fighting off bad cholesterol (LDL).

Uses For Olive Oil - Part 2

DAY 5 OF OLIVE WEEK

Uses of Olive Oil on the Skin

Olive Oil is a fantastic source of Vitamin E, which you may have noticed is present in a lot of your normal skin care products. It readily absorbs UV radiation, and assists in repairing cells and preventing cell damage. The oil can be used on all skin types.
